J.D. Vance grew up in the Rust Belt city of Middletown, Ohio, and the Appalachian town of Jackson, Kentucky. He enlisted in the Marine Corps after high school and served in Iraq. A graduate of the Ohio State University and Yale Law School, he has contributed to the National Review and is a principal at a leading Silicon Valley investment firm. Vance lives in San Francisco with his wife and two dogs.

Das Buch fügt sich vorzüglich in die politische und gesellschaftliche Landschafts Amerikas ein, was wohl ein Grund dafür ist, dass es in den vergangenen Monaten so viel Aufmerksamkeit auf sich zog. In Hillbilly Elegy beschreibt der Autor seinen Aufstieg von einer ländlichen Region in die akademische Hauptstadt des Landes und führt dabei viele teils lustige, teils jedoch auch emotionale Geschichten aus. Das Buch gibt dem Leser einen Einblick in die nach der Präsidentschaftswahl Donald Trumps so viel besungenen "Vergessenen" im Herzen des Landes, die mit den Amerikanern der Küsten nur wenig zutun haben. Der Autor entflieht dieser Umgebung und blickt in dem Buch auf diese zurück.Das Werk erhält die Aufmerksamkeit nicht zu Unrecht, von der Sprache her ist es durchaus verständlich und insgesamt sehr gut zu lesen. Klare Kaufempfehlung meinerseits.
Zugegeben, der Autor hat sich über die Gesellschaftsschicht erhoben, in die er hineingeboren wurde. Daher kann er mit einigem Abstand über die Zustände schreiben die im Milieu des "White Trash" herrschen. Das buch ist empfehlenswert für Amerikakenner und hier vor allem für jene, die längere Zeit im Land der begrenzten Möglichkeiten gelebt haben. eigentlich ein schrecklicher Einblick in die Zustände.....
ich bewerte keine Bücher mehr. Nachdem ich zahllose Rezensionen hier auf Amazon gelesen habe, weiß ich, dass sie alle so subjektiv sind, dass sie nicht als objektive Bewertung taugen. Lest und bildet Euch Eure Meinung selbst!
Das Buch ist ein Muss für jeden, der sich auf die Fahnen schreibt, sich über Amerika auszukennen. Es ist gut verständlich geschrieben und liefert einen tollen, wenngleich anstrengenden Einblick in die ländlicheren Regionen und die dort lebenden Familien.
Die Handlung kann jeder nachlesen, das Buch empfiehlt sich in diesen Zeiten. Sowohl um die Wahl Trumps nachzuvollziehen, fällt uns ja immer schwer, und um Entwicklungen im eigenen Land zu vergleichen.
Did not explain everyday America in any consistent way - it's just another story about getting out of there and making something of yourself while not forgetting about your roots (which are however something to smirk at).
Absolut empfehlenswerte, interessante Lektüre. Gibt einen guten Einblick in das Leben der weissen Unterschicht in den USA und lässt den Leser bis zu einem gewissen Grad nachvollziehen, warum die Amis ihren aktuellen Präsidenten gewählt haben...
